University of Wales Trinity Saint David

University of Wales Trinity Saint David is a collegiate university operating on three main campuses in South West Wales. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is one of the newest universities in the UK, yet it has a long and rich history. Formed in 2010 by merging together the University of Wales, Lampeter and Trinity University College Carmarthen and in 2012 the former Swansea Metropolitan University joined the UWTSD family.

The University needed to purchase various Audio Visual equipment to develop three new Pilot Rooms to encourage collaborative work between students and lecturers. Comcen won the tender due to being the most economically advantageous supplier with a suitable proposal. The proposal consisted of three separate projects:

Project 1: PC Lab in the Mount Pleasant campus in Swansea

Comcen supplied and installed three 42” LED HD displays panels plus a further two 42” LED HD displays on trolleys within the PC Lab. A ceiling mounted projector was installed at the front of the Lab to display onto a 3 metre wide projection screen.

An Extron 7” touch panel control system was installed into the lectern to allow a single point of control for the new system. The control panel allows the user full control of all displays including the projector allowing the user to select or deselect each display individually to be part of the presentation. This permits the Lecturer to move around the classroom with an iPad which will replicate the control on the lectern using the Extron Control App. Audio is controlled via the Extron 7” touch panel into powered speakers located each side of the projection screen.

The careful design of five separate PODS or Collaboration Areas then allows the students to discuss projects and display onto the screens via the Extron distribution amp, controlled by a 6 button panel which is housed in the centre of the desk, allowing students to choose which PC would be displayed on the 42” LED by pressing the relevant buttons.

Project 2: 90 Seat Studio in Town Hill campus in Swansea.

This Studio project was designed to enhance the collaborative nature of lectures within the educational environment. Comcen supplied and installed two ceiling mounted projectors which displayed onto two 3m wide projection screen. On each side of the room two wall mounted 60” LED HD Display were installed providing students with optimum viewing.

By operating the Extron 5” touch panel control system situated on the lectern the user has full control of all displays. The user may select or deselect each display individually to be part of the presentation. The Lecturer can have control via an IPAD using the Extron Control App.

Comcen’s engineers also installed the Audio aspect of the project which consisted of four wall mount speakers at either end of room with associated amp and mixer situated at the lectern which can be controlled via the touchlink, a wireless lapel mic will be attached for voice audio along with an induction loop. The Lecturer can invite students to show their presentations via the wireless Extron Sharelink 200 Presentation Gateway.

Project 3: 48 Seat Studio in Ty Brynglas Campus, Swansea.

On a slightly smaller scale the 48 seat studio at the Brynglas Campus. The main system included 2 new 32” LED High Definition displays panels. The university had a requirement that the two existing projectors in the room could be incorporated into the new AV setup but in a modified position. Our engineers de-installed the projectors and then re-installed them to the desired location. Control of the system is provided by a Extron 5” touch panel control system situated on the lectern. The control panel allows the user full control of all displays where the user may select or deselect each display individually to be part of the presentation. The Audio is also controlled via the Extron 5” touch panel into powered speakers located each side of the projection screen.

The delivery and installation on all the projects was carried out well within the time frame and delivered using our own drivers and installation engineers who also ensured that all packaging was removed from site and recycled correctly as per our Green Dragon environmental policy.
